Master sculptor Philander Begay carved this one of a kind Koshare kachina out of a single tufa stone. The clown is the enforcer of order and tradition at the ceremonial dances in the pueblos. He is found at the edges of the dance, usually with several other clowns. This fine bolo shows him in full regalia. He wears old worn moccasins and a loin skirt. The rest of his naked body is painted with striations of charcoal from the fire. He holds a large red watermelon, rind and all. The melon is a large gem grade natural oxblood coral of the finest quality. The rind is inlaid natural Broken Arrow variscite. It is set on a toggle allowing the melon to be turned in any direction. In the hot sun his deep red tongue hangs out, cleaved in the middle for realism. On his head are corn tassels made of solid 14 karat gold. On his ears is a headdress of bright 14 karat gold to match. The clown sits on a marvelous hand made burgundy colored bolo cord of the highest quality. At each end are bright sleek tips with large 14 karat gold droplets. Gorgeous, innovative and collectible, this is one of Philander’s finest creations.
