This exquisite piece hand made by award winning Navajo artist, Terry Martinez, features an exceptional rare gem grade natural Aztec turquoise cabochon. The Aztec turquoise mine was first discovered in 1889 by George Simmons who detected remnants of an early and primitive lapidary shop. According to Frank R. Morrissey, author of Turquoise Deposits of Nevada, “From a study of the implements, archaeologists estimated the mine must have been worked 200 years before Columbus reached America…The presence of the lapidary shop argued for an intelligence which realized the economy of transporting finished, or partly finished, turquoise from the site, rather than the rough ore with its waste rock. It is thought to indicate the miners may have been Aztecs or Toltecs.†This is an interesting insight into the history of this spectacular rare form of turquoise.
The stone in this bracelet is an elegant aqua blue with golden, tan and reddish-brown matrix surrounded by phenomenal silver work. Hand braided wire is displayed beneath the intricate hand chiseled bezel of the stone creating a shadowbox effect with a smooth outer lip of silverwork. Eight sterling silver droplets are featured in the four corners of the center of the piece and are also used to separate the reposse designs on either side. Overlay patterns accent the outer edges of the band which was also made from heavy gauge sterling silver.
