The gem is held in her signature hand chiseled bezel that curls over the top of the cabochon. Deep floral designs flank down the side with a heart shape below. At the end of the heavy bracelet shank she has deeply stamped symmetrical lines that radiate out at the terminals which are cut away from the rest of the piece. This is Sammie Kescoli Begay's contemporary revival of the classic Navajo first phase concho belt. The first phase of Navajo silver work dates from the 1860s to the turn of the century. Early smiths learned from itinerant Spanish and Mexican blacksmiths who taught them the trade. They were made from coin, melted and forged into ingots then hammered into shape. Typically the conchos were ovals with little designs in the middle. The design elements were on the perimeter. Sammie has revived this phase of Navajo design to perfection with this heavy and elegant belt. Produced entirely out of hand rolled and hammered ingot sterling silver, it is classic in design and beauty.
