This exquisite piece hand made by award winning Navajo artist, Terry Martinez, features an exceptional rare gem grade natural Aztec turquoise cabochon. The Aztec turquoise mine was first discovered in 1889 by George Simmons who detected remnants of an early and primitive lapidary shop. According to Frank R. Morrissey, author of Turquoise Deposits of Nevada, “From a study of the implements, archaeologists estimated the mine must have been worked 200 years before Columbus reached America…The presence of the lapidary shop argued for an intelligence which realized the economy of transporting finished, or partly finished, turquoise from the site, rather than the rough ore with its waste rock. It is thought to indicate the miners may have been Aztecs or Toltecs.†This is an interesting insight into the history of this spectacular rare form of turquoise.
